October Care
October brings the full end of summer. We will still be seeing growth on our trees, but it will be winding down for the year. Pay close attention to watering as most of your trees will have begun to slow down now. Often a rainier time of year, be careful not to over-water. This is the start of a beautiful season as trees such as Japanese maples will begin to change into their beautiful fall colors.
Pay close attention to watering
As we move into fall, most trees don't need as high a nitrogen requirement but fertilizing now is important to keep your trees strong come spring. (It is a myth that using zero Nitrogen is good this time of year.)
At this time of year, your trees will be focusing heavily on developing next year’s buds.
Consider spraying with fungicide. (like Daconil, Mancozeb, Cleery’s 3336 etc)
We will want to hold back on pruning most species so that new growth hardens off in time for winter.
Take extra care when pruning flowering species. Many flowering species create flower buds in fall and if you prune them off now, you won't have any flowers next year!
Now is the time to start figuring out how you will protect your bonsai in winter!
